Marine Science Launch

Curtin Mauritius inaugurated its Centre of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (COEST) on September 7, 2023, during an official ceremony.

Professor Jeremy Kilburn, Curtin University’s Provost, emphasized Curtin’s unwavering commitment to education, research, and community outreach in Mauritius and the region. Professor Christine Erbe, Director of COEST, outlined current projects and future prospects for Mauritius and the broader region. The center aims to become a global leader in using acoustics for sustainable growth in collaboration with key partners like the Mauritius Oceanography Institute, Odysseo Oceanarium, Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, and Ebony Forest.

Ms. Katie Lalor, Deputy High Commissioner of the Australian High Commission to Mauritius and Seychelles, praised Curtin Mauritius for the initiative and affirmed Australia’s support for sustainable development. The audience, diverse and vibrant, included government officials, private sector representatives, diplomats, NGOs, universities, and ocean, science, and technology enthusiasts.
